Huacheng Yu joined Guanglu Lab as a fourth-year undergraduate chemistry student in the Tang Aoqing Elite Program for his graduation project, which focused on host-guest interactions between dye molecules and porous materials. After graduation, Huacheng continued doctoral study at Tsinghua University.

In his earlier self-introduction, Huacheng wrote that he comes from Changzhou, Jiangsu Province, and described himself as humorous and easygoing.
